Understanding Intimate Partner Violence in the Lives of Black Women: Culturally-Responsive Assessment and Treatment

Course Description
This interactive presentation will give participants the tools and practical strategies to identify, reach, and effectively serve Black women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) by providing survivor-centered, culturally-responsive, trauma-informed, strengths-based care.

Measurable Learning Objectives
1. Participants will identify tools to conduct assessments and provide care using an intersectional lens
2. Participants will identify tools to conduct IPV assessments while considering within a web of historical trauma, structural violence, institutional violence, and community violence
3. Participants will identify tools to conduct assessments of common forms of IPV in the lives of Black women, including reproductive coercion, non-fatal strangulation, and domestic homicide.
4. Participants will identify three therapeutic strategies to treat PTSD and depression


Instructor Information
Dr. Carolyn M. West is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Washington and editor/contributor of the book Violence in the Lives of Black Women: Battered, Black, and Blue. As an award-winning author, internationally recognized speaker, documentary filmmaker, and expert witness, Dr. West has multiple vantage points to create innovative training materials to educate and equip professionals with the skills to provide culturally-responsive services to survivors of color.
